For an event to explore the aesthetic of the White Cube space I propose to hold a birthday party in a White Cube gallery space. The event will be a fun, noisy occasion to break out of the normally staid and quiet exhibition space. There will be art there, in the form of performance art and sound art, but for the non-art-lover there will also be food and drink to generate the party atmosphere. The Birthday Party exhibition will have party games, but with a twist to make a comment on the White Cube. These will comprise of pass the parcel/White Cube, with a White Cube wrapped in layers of wrapping paper and a piñata White Cube, so we are literally attacking (the idea of) it. There will also be nonsensical party games, like musical chairs with too many chairs, and in the corner will be an un-inflated bouncy castle. The slightly bizarre aspect will accentuate the idea that the White Cube aesthetic and ideologies should not be considered the norm, as the idea of a space without ideologies is impossible. Finally, there will be a White Cube cake. Once eaten the White Cube will be inside and outside us all. This perpetuates the idea of an inability to escape the White Cube.

And of course, Brian O’Doherty will be invited…
